A Note from Pastor Matt 7/13/17

Hey CrossPoint,

I wanted to give you a heads up about two things I’m super excited about that are coming soon. First, we will be finishing up our study of God’s incredible love for us in 1 John this month, which will lead to our next series, “The Gospel.” The point of this series is to make sure that we are grounded in the most essential elements of our faith because we live in a culture that tries to muddy everything. It is essential that we as believers know what we believe and why we believe it because we are God’s chosen conduits to deliver this incredible news of redemption! The Gospel is essential for us to understand personally and share passionately from a place of deep experience. As we’ve studied the love of God in 1 John, I have a greater understanding of the kind of love God loves me with and I’ve begun to experience that love on a deeper level. That’s what I’m praying will happen as we study the Gospel–a better understanding and a deeper experience of the most significant thing God has done for us!

This leads me to the second thing you’re going to be hearing more about in the coming weeks. We want to equip our entire church to be better at relationally connecting with others so that we can more effectively impact them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We live in a post-Christian, post-truth world today. Nothing we do can change that fact. So, how do we communicate eternal truths to a people who do not believe that those truths exist? We know something about people that will never change: people hurt and people behave out of their hurt. The way to gain influence with people is to meet them where they hurt and guide them to hope. Ultimately, we are responsible to guide them to hope in Jesus Christ because their hurt is anchored in their own sinfulness and the sinfulness of others visited upon them.

Rescue Academy is a seven-session study focused on helping Christians meet people in their hurt to build honest relationships based on trust, love and hope while continuously bringing them to the truth of their own identity and love from God. We are going to be asking that everyone at CrossPoint participate in Rescue Academy to gain understanding and tools to relate to and help others move from being stuck and closed off to being hopeful and open to hear about what Jesus has done for them. As I’ve worked through Rescue Academy, I have grown personally and found a better way of relating to people where they are so that I can point them to Jesus.

There is a strategic and intentional connection between our series, “The Gospel,” and Rescue Academy. We are beginning with this series because we want to make sure that every one of us understands clearly the message that we carry to a world that God has called us to reach. This message has been the same since God revealed it to us through His written Word and it will never change. Rescue Academy, which has been developed on biblical principles from a biblical worldview, helps us relate with people in terms they will understand regardless of their background. It is not a new way of evangelism or a new understanding of the Gospel. It is simply a tool that will help you and I be more effective in our calling to be light and love in a dark and wounded world. Our calling is to get the message of Jesus out in a way that effectively communicates God’s incredible and personal love for humanity. As I mentioned last Sunday, God is not satisfied with just telling us that He loves us or even showing us that He loves us. God is only satisfied when He is abiding in us, walking day to day sharing our struggle towards transformation in Christ. Our goal is to help equip the people of CrossPoint to be effective witnesses for Jesus Christ which includes being able to walk with others through the struggle they face and being able to clearly communicate the love of Jesus not only in speech but in deed and truth. I have to admit that I am really excited about what God has in store for us and how He will use us if we are willing to continue the process of humble surrender!
